Some fun news!
almost 6 years ago – Fri, Jun 19, 2020 at 03:26:37 PM

Hello Backers! Thought you might enjoy this... Your names are about to land on the shelves of the world’s most serious movie collectors. Arrow Films have just announced the website exclusive box set version of their upcoming Méliès A Trip To The Moon Blu-Ray. I’ve contributed a new video essay to the disc and the collectors edition comes with a copy of our book! It’s limited to 1000 copies only and it’s the same version of the book that you have. So you’re all named in it. I’ve had to keep it a secret up until the announcement today. I believe a non-book version is on the way, so don’t worry about double-dipping. Details are here: https://arrowfilms.com/product-detail/george-m-li-s--a-trip-to-the-moon---autobiography-blu-ray/FCD2003 In other news, The box set boxes are on the way and I’m assured I’ll have them by July 15th. We’ve been busy preparing all of the stuff that goes in them so we can start loading and dispatching them as soon as the delivery gets here. Thanks so much to those of you who have received your copies of the book and sent lovely messages. I appreciate them all but posts on social media with the #georgesmelies hashtag really, really helps to spread the word. Thanks! All the best, Jon

Booked.

A SNEAKY PEEK!
almost 6 years ago – Wed, May 27, 2020 at 05:54:29 PM

Hello Dear Backers,

I hope you’re all keeping well in these troublesome times and hopefully this update will be a little ray of sunshine.

Firstly, the books are in the country! One of you very helpfully suggested I could follow their route from Hong Kong via marinetraffic.com. I got a little obsessed. I lost a whole day to the excitement of watching them navigate the Suez Canal. They should be turning up at my (tiny) house on Thursday. My long-suffering wife and I will be in shipping them out to you immediately.

The wooden boxes are just finishing up manufacture and will be shipping out very soon (yes, I probably will!) we’re hoping to have them in 4 weeks time, at which point they will also immediately begin shipping out to you.

Most of the box set elements have arrived now, so I thought you might like a sneaky peek at how well they’ve all turned out. I’ve put a real emphasis on making these sets very high quality, so it’s been a real adventure finding appropriate suppliers. I’ve made a couple of changes to the original plan too, so we’ll look at those. I’m not showing you everything, though - there’ll still be a couple of surprises when you open the box yourself.

By the way, backers at the book-only level, there are going to be a small number of surplus box sets. So, if you’d like to upgrade, send me a message ASAP and that should be fine. OK....

Starting with the pin, this just turned out beautifully. It’s chrome plated and very shiny! The logo and star are stamped right into it in black. It’s very classy.

The film strip shows the whole ’rocket in the eye’ moon sequence from A Trip To The Moon. This is genuine Kodak 35mm film.

The replica of the original handwritten manuscript has been a nightmare to produce but we got there in the end. i wanted to retain the exact dimensions of the original and they rutned out to be apparently a long-forgotten paper size from France. I ended up getting it produced in a place in Italy which could handle it. The pages, like the original, are double-sided and come unbound. We’ve also sourced special protective artwork bags to keep them safe in the box.

Im thrilled to finally unveil the Méliès portrait I comissioned for this project from legendary movie poster artist Graham Humphreys. Look at that!!! We’re getting ours framed. I just adore the detail and the colours. Gorgeous work, Graham! I’m waiting on delivery of the Nick Rhodes print too.

Here’s the first change that I was talking about. I found out that the replica business card that came with the 1945 book was a FAKE. Since it was fairly uninspiring, I decided to have a new one designed. This replacement is based on the design of French business cards in the 19teens. I like it.

The last big change I made was this... originally I was going to include ’art cards’, which were to be postcards of images from a few Méliès films. I suddenly realised one day that in all the dvd box sets I‘ve bought over the years, I’ve never once actually displayed them. So, I thought ”what kind of art card would my backers actually want to display?” and I came up with THIS!

So this is a HOLOGRAPHIC RAINBOW FOIL  moon stamped onto high quality black card. The  photos don’t even do it justice. The quality of the printing is incredible. Youre going to love it.

So thats it so far, there are still a couple of surprises going into the box to delight you when yours arrives.

as I said, anyone wanting to upgrade or even if you want to buy a second box as a treat for somebody you know, just drop me a message.

All the best,

JON

VERY IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ!

Hello Backers!

I hope you’re all well during this strange moment in history.

OK, we are finally moving into the final stage and delivery is imminent. As I type this, your books are currently sat in a shipping container - on a ship - somewhere on one of the oceans heading for good old Blighty.

I’ve been putting all of the final arrangements in place and everything is shaping up nicely. I’m sending you this update for a couple of reasons; the first is VERY IMPORTANT...

In the next couple of days, you’ll be receiving an update from me giving you details of how to change your address for delivery. If you have moved since you first backed this project, you will need to do this. Once the update is sent, you’ll have ONLY 48 HOURS to change your address. I beg you to just get it done as soon as you get the email. It’ll be very difficult for me to change anything after that and will lead to a(nother) lengthy delay in you getting your stuff.

I’d also like to explain how the shipping is going to work, so you can get a vague idea of when your stuff might arrive. Since this project started, We have also moved and are no longer in a spacious London flat, we’re now in a tiny cottage in the middle of nowhere. Quite where we’re going to put almost 3000 books and 500 wooden boxes is... well, we’re trying not to discuss it. So, what I’ve decided to do is to stagger the deliveries. The books are arriving first and I’ll be shipping the book-only orders out first.

I know. That sucks for the box set backers but we’re only talking a couple of weeks. Not only will this clear some precious space for when the boxes actually arrive but it also means that by then my wife will be on her summer holiday and able to help me assemble the box sets. The corona virus lockdown means that I can’t bring people in to help us with this and we have an increasingly manic 17month old running around the place needing constant supervision.

So, it’s all on it’s way, just. A little more patience would be very gratefully appreciated.
