Hello Backers!
Well, I'm very excited because the first sample proof of the book arrived yesterday from China!
I thought I'd share some photos and thoughts about it with you and I'd love to hear any of your thoughts too!
So, here's the front cover. I'm still toying with the idea of having text on there but I think the image is so striking and makes it just a really cool object to own. I'm also wondering if the image could be bigger or smaller.
I'm very happy with the foil stamping. There was some concern that it would be too complicated an image for the process but I think it looks really clear and I love the quality of it.
Here you can see the foil-stamped spine, which I think turned out really nicely. Also, the final title of the book - it's been a real headache working out what title to go with, but I think this is punchy and clear.
This is where the problems start. The saleswoman didn't talk to her printing manager or follow my designer's instructions. So they printed it on very thin paper - which I hate - and the actual print quality looks like a photocopy, which was a shock to say the least.
Here you can really see the poor printing quality. Although the book is black and white, there are greys in it so they really should have used a full colour printing process. This morning has been a flurry of communication back and forth. I speak no Chinese so I'm certainly in no position to blame them fully for what has been missed due to bad communication but I'm surprised that they would produce and send me something so clearly not ready for production. It cost a lot of money to produce, so we're currently debating what happens next and who pays for it but we'll work it out.
For now, it does just feel great to finally have it in my hands in book form!

Hello Backers,
I’ve had lots of messages this week asking for a new update. So here it is!
Firstly, as ever, an apology - I know this project has dragged on a lot longer than any of us had hoped for and I am sorry about that. As you might imagine, as frustrating as it is for you to wait, it’s even more so for me as the actual book is finished so I want it delivered too!
There have been a couple of reasons for the delay, anyone who has had kids will know the chaos of the first. Renee Jeanne is very happy and healthy but she’s also a full-time job. Both time and energy are rare for me these days but I always do at least one thing a day to advance the book. The biggest recent setback has been that I lost contact with the printer that the project was lined up with. This is my first experience of sourcing overseas manufacture, so I’m trying to be as careful as possible. The good news is that I’ve now secured a deal with another printer. I’m expecting a physical proof copy of the book within a few weeks. If that’s OK, then it’s full steam ahead.
I’m reluctant to give an expected delivery date now as I don’t want to disappoint again but I feel very positive that we’re on the home stretch now and I promise to update more frequently as the delivery side comes together.

Dear Backers,
Thank you so much for getting your name changes to me. My inbox has not been so hectic for a very long time. I particularly want to thank so many of you for also your very kind messages of encouragement and enthusiasm. I wish I'd had time to be able to respond to all of you, but most of my work for the past couple of days has been accompanied by an overture of the wails of a baby who refuses to nap and demands full, constant eye contact at all times. But, thank you - you guys are the best.
Rest assured, if you messaged me through Kickstarter (or even through the comments section) your changes have been made. If you sent me the same message through every single available means you could think to contact me including Kickstarter, personal email, the email link on my website AND Facebook messenger all with the heading "URGENT!" I have also made your changes, but please take a chill pill.
90% of the changes were American people asking me to add in their middle initial. Which is fine... but whats that all about, eh?
So, the deadline is passed now. The manuscript is locked. It feels fantastic. I'm really happy with the book. It's exactly what I wanted it to be - the translation is the beating heart of the book and if your interest begins and ends there, that's no problem but the supporting material gives you an overview of several things:
An introduction which looks at the notion of autobiography as a format
An exhaustive (but hopefully not exhausting) guide to the development of cinema from shadows on cave walls up until the moment Méliès attended the Lumiére Brothers screening and was inspired to pick up a camera for the first time.
A full commentary to the autobiography document which fills in the gaps that Méliès leaves, explores the inconsistencies of what he occasionally says and gives depth and further information regarding people, places and processes he mentions.
Another fascinating Méliès document, translated especially for this book into English.

I'm currently locking the manuscript and need to confirm the names you wish listed in the book.
Below is the list as I have it right now. Please find your name on it then:
- If it is how you want it to appear, then you don't need to do anything.
- If you want it changed, send me a message via Kickstarter stating the name as it currently appears and the name you'd like it replaced with.
- If you'd like it removed, send me a message.
- If it's not there and you'd like it added, send me a message including exactly how you'd like it to appear.
All of the names will be standardized for the finished design, ie, you can't have your name in all-caps or with wacky emojis and symbols (you crazy kids)
I'm sorry this is a rush but I can only give you 48 hours to get changes to me, so after Thursday, 9AM GMT, it'll be locked. That's why this email is so urgently titled.
